Google is apparently taking down all/most fediverse apps from the Play Store 📦

Unless they're maintaining a hard-coded blacklist of instances with hateful content.

What's fediverse?

mastodon and other internet forum/ social media alternatives to my understanding, actually is a real big deal, imagine if they took down discord or twitter because one account/server posted "hate speech", I'd almost call it a nuclear option but google would probably cave the other way if someone got enough money

That's a bad comparison because the Fediverse is based on communication protocols, just like HTTP is for the browser. Anyone can create their own social media platform, similar to how everyone can create their own website. Google Chrome doesn't ban websites with hate speech or even child pornography either, only known malware sites AFAIK, but you can even turn that off if you really want to. What Google is doing here is in no way justifiable and I hope they reverse their decision.

I never said it was justified, I was just trying to find the closest translation I could that isn’t to technical

Federated social media platforms. There's no central server like it is for Twitter, Facebook or even Ruqqus. Anyone can spin up their own instance and connect with others. Google wants to tackle it on the client-level by forcing the developers to ban certain instances like Gab.
