another thought: with some programs, if you use the code more frequently, you can assign it to something easier to remember, like you could type !heart! and a program will give you a ♥

You can do that pretty much OS-wide on MacOS.

that's right, it's some kind of shortcuts in system settings, right? windows has autohotkey and linux autokey as examples, probably others

Yeah, I think it's in the Keyboard section of System Preferences.
