Is poal.co just a fork of voat's code? 📦

Note: this is purely discussing the technical side/code of the site not its politics Any way, i went to it and visually they look exacly the same to me. Is it just a fork?

No it's based of phuks.co

I haven't investigated the back end of the sites, but also: yes, obviously. From what I understand it's all just based on a schism. Two hundred racists disagreed on how racist they should be, so forty of them took their ball and set up a completely separate site.

I sense a pattern forming

racist enough to say that the rape of Nanking was a good thing, or that King Leupold II did nothing wrong?

This completely baseless speculation, which is also entirely incorrect, is currently top comment. Meanwhile, a comment with the correct answer lies downvoted somewhere below. Poal is a fork of Phuks.co, which you can see spelled out on their license page, among other places: https://poal.co/license Voat was a different thing entirely: https://github.com/voat/voat Ideologically, both were founded on nearly identical attitudes towards free speech and rejection of all censorship. The differences that drove the split were technical.

And the truth is down voted. Of course.

I think so? It was made by disgruntled voaters a few years back.

I thought Voat was closed source? Also I didn't look hard but I thought Poal was closed sourced too. Guess none of these sites want to stick around for long

Voat started open source and .net framework, converted to .net core thanks to hard work from the community and then went closed source.

Wow that's a pretty dick thing to do.

Yeah, I hear you but it became a matter of self defense. When you allow people to say whatever they like it's bound to piss some people off. Voat had an impressive record of staying up and keeping its data safe considering its shoe string budget. Am I disappointed? Sure. Do I blame Putt? Nah, that'd be like blaming the rape victim. I blame the faggots that can't stand the idea that somebody out there is allowed to be vocal about disdaining them.

What does that have to do with going closed source?
1
Putt's justification was that closing the source made it safer since apparently the bad actors were running the github source against code scanners to find vulnerabilities. I disagree but it wasn't my call.

Yeah, that's a pretty shitty justification. If anything open-source makes it more secure since holes can be closed more easily since there are more eyes on it. If the code sucked, it needed to be fixed, not closed source. This is why projects like Linux are so damn secure.

I know I thought it was too but the similarities are making me think otherwise

No it isn't. It doesn't even use the same stack. Poal is a fork of Throat, which runs Phuks. Voat code: https://github.com/voat/ Base for Poal code: https://github.com/Phuks-co/throat
