I'm looking for a new HDD. What brand and style is best for an external?

Not Seagate so I've heard.

USB3 drive caddy and SSD for performance. if you want prebuilt look for something western digital. i would stay away from seagate with their failure rates

From what I read in the past Western Digital drives are a good balance between quality and affordability. I've been happy with their WD Elements and Easy Store line. Seagate has inferior quality and I avoid those.

too many failures from seagate for me to ever trust them again with spinning disks

WD Easystore. You can buy one on sale and it would be cheaper than buying an internal drive with the same capacity.

I usually get an NVME M.2 SSD and purchase an enclosure for my external drives. Could spend around $120 give or take.

I've always gone with Western Digital for any external hard drive (whereas for internal, I like Toshiba, WD, & Crucial, & Samsung), and will be replacing my aging WD portable drive soon (I should've done it a year ago since I don't like keeping anything around for more than 5 years at most).
