Who the fuck do these people think they are, trying to order me around, telling me what I have to do to use the device I paid for?

I enjoy the insulting lies they usually add like "improved user experience" which usually means breaking the few apps you actually use.

My general attitude regarding these things is if it isn't broke, don't fix it. Unless they are adding actual new features I'm usually not interested.

> new features New 'features' I actually want; not just another vending-machine portal.

And every update takes up more storage and ram which makes the phone run slower and slower, no doubt by design.
3
More typically it is in order to implement bug fixes and security patches. Too many people just don't update and maybe the manufacturer of OP's phone decided they needed to do their part to keep their users safe by sacrificing some user agency.
3
An excuse to release crappy software.

An OS update cannot take up more storage than what is allocated to the system partition without repartitioning the device. This is actually why older devices like the Nexus 4 and Nexus 7 have to be repartitioned to continue to flash custom ROMs, basically you steal space from another partition to increase the size of the system partition. This is a risky thing to do and you can't actually shrink f2fs partitions (which most Android phones use nowadays) so I doubt any OEM has actually implemented this in an OTA update.

"Now with improved key logging functionality!" "Upgrading NSA backdoor"

I fucking hate this. I can't wait to get on LineageOS or something similar.

Its so nice. Complete control of every setting.
4
Do it. Having zero google of your phone is amazing.
18
Pinephone when?
11
Look into /e/ Foundation. De-Googled Android operating system that you can flash to a lot of Android devices.
3
I haven't found one that works with this phone/carrier unfortunately.

On all makes and models? From all years? Do you have any source that the hardware is infected to that level across the board?

You're talking about the baseband. That's a black box that not even Google has control over, in fact Google doesn't really have control over the CPU hence why even Pixels only get 3 years of OS updates.
5
Yeah. Gonna need a source on that shit.

Hey man, this guy on the internet says it's legit so.. obviously it's legit. That said, the tech does exist so it's really just a question of trust at this point.

> Nothing is "De-Googled" if you are using an Android hardware device. Volla pretty much is, if you'd still call it an Android. > There is a built-in chip that sends data to Google even if you install a new rom. That's BS until proven. phone manufacturers don't add stuff which won't generate revenue. Also sending data would use battery, they optimize against that too. Sure, many cheap Android devices phone home, but not to Google, but to the manufacturer; and they get a few cents for it.

What’s Pinephone?
10
A Linux based phone manufacturer
7
Better for privacy I’m guessing?

Yes. It has DIP switches on the back allowing you to physically disconnect the circuits for the front camera, microphone, WLAN/Cell carrier, etc. The firmware is ridiculously not ready for user use however. I have evaluated most of them, and none of them appear ready to replace your Android/iOS device. Sailfish: The camera doesn't work. Ubuntu: It resets for no reason. Mobian: It works, but be prepared to wait very long times for things to load as they are full featured desktop applications. Auto screen rotation doesn't work, either. It's a very cool device, but you can't really use it daily (yet.)
3
Which one would you pick if you had to try to use it daily? I'm looking at them online but it says they are out of stock on all of them.
2
They are going to be shipping soon. They got an order backlog because of a pile-up of orders around the holiday season. I think you can still place an order, and if so that should guarantee that yours will be closer to the front of the line when they start shipping again. If you want to use the PinePhone daily, you are in for a bumpy ride. It apparently has an issue where the phone goes into deep-sleep mode and misses incoming calls (it will light up the screen and do nothing else.) The fix available is a small program that simply prevents deep sleep, which is bad because your battery gets eaten up pretty quickly without it. Another problem is battery life; I've taken to bringing a portable battery pack with me at all times because the firmware available is a full desktop OS and eats the battery like crazy. Also, I wasn't even able to evaluate the phone part of it because my nano-SIM doesn't work with it - it uses a micro-SIM so make sure you can get one of those from your carrier first. Insofar as the version of the PinePhone is concerned, it doesn't really matter which version you get. You can flash your own firmware pretty easily, and if you're not in the position to use "dd" or a similar tool you just shouldn't own one. You need to know the basic fundamentals of Linux to be able to use it, in my humble opinion. I'm willing to help, though.
1
Also another thing I should add is that not all nano-SIMs fail to work with it, some nano-SIMs will - but I have a particularly evil carrier and they likely did some trickery to make my nano-SIM not work with it. We shall have to wait to see if they can provide a compatible SIM card. I also apologize for the late reply, the demands on my time have been crazy lately.

It's a Linux based smartphone. All the privacy, power etc of Linux without bs and corporate Spyware. Edit: as others have mentioned, it's still a little ways out. Someday though... https://www.pine64.org/ https://wiki.pine64.org/index.php/PinePhone#Operating_Systems https://wiki.pine64.org/wiki/PinePhone_Software_Releases

I love PinePhone but it isn't even a usable replacement yet :(
7
Im probably gonna order one just to tinker. I have read they are pretty unusable.
10
To tinker it's 100% worth your money. I have an Raspberry Pi the PinePhone has a built in screen and LTE so it can be super portable or you can hook up a USB-C dock and use like a desktop computer. Very cool.
2
Yeah I love my raspberry pi butnits not exactly portable
3
The PinePhone is fine, it just lacks an OS. To be fair, it's still a lot more mature than OpenMoko was.
12
Phone: "update now?" Me: "NO" phone: "wasnt asking"
10
I'm degoogling today. I literally marked it on my calendar Make sure to [backup](https://takeout.google.com/?pli=1) all your data though. Google deletes inactive accounts permanently

samsung 9s?
13
Close. S8. I use these things until they fall apart. I want my $800 worth.
7
And on the other hand you have a phone with no update after 2 years. Nice management from the manufacturer ! Thanks LineageOS and Pinephone for the future.
5
Install LineageOS.
1
There isn't a ROM for my phone/carrier.
1
There is an unofficial build for the S8, however it comes with some caveats. It is somewhat buggy, and it will only work if yours is a model that can have its bootloader unlocked. Unlocking the bootloader is only possible on the Exynos versions of the S8/S8+/Note 8 or the Snapdragon model purchased outside of the U.S. Not all Galaxy phones sold in the U.S. can be unlocked. https://www.xda-developers.com/unofficial-lineageos-17-1-android-10-samsung-galaxy-s8-plus-note-8/
1
Yep this is a US model that can't be unlocked.
1
You still have options - Custom ROM for your S8 (rooting it) - Debloat the phone (ADB) - Shove Arch Linux on it and learn some Bash. Doing this with an S7 - has become my portable wifi router and linux-based pen testing device
3
What phone/OS?
3
Galaxy S8
3
Can't wait until Fedora Mobility and the Librem 5 mature enough for me to use full-time.
3
How dare they
3
They have stolen my dreams and my childhood.
2
Meanwhile I'm just sittin over here enjoying my dumbphone.
2
That is bull shit. I'm using lineage OS and I will never go back. Feels Luke I actually own my phone
2
that is a fucking iphone? you need android with a custom rom, and fuck them
1
No, it's a Samsung Galaxy 8 with Verizon. I can't find a custom ROM for this particular phone.

I feel ya, here take my upvote the least thing I can do.

This definitely strikes me as a way to convince boomers to install the latest os version, still completely unneeded and intrusive though. Tbh if it wasn't for these pop ups and the potential for 2-3 more years of security updates i'd have stayed on android 8.0 since later ui changes seem like a downgrade
2
Take off the Google shit I don't need or want, then update!
2
Contrary to belief, you don't own the whole device if you read pp and tos. You can't reverse engineer for example.
1
What's wrong with system update? Aren't updates necessary? Also there's install later option.
13
I paid 800 bucks for this phone. I own it and it should be up to me if I want to update it at all. And they only let you delay the update so long. Updates are as likely to break things as they are to fix them. And they never explain what they are doing when they update, other than vague explanations. I should know what they are doing to my property and be the one to decide if I want it done.
0
Every company pushes updates for the OS. You may be right but there's no option. I update for the security reasons.
5
That's why you use a degooogled custom ROM Like lineage OS on a phone that respects ownership like one plus
3
Check out what John Deer have been doing in terms of 'right to repair' - you are pissed about a 800 buck phone, imagine a 100,000 buck combine harvester with DRM lock
1
The update will also brick your phone and require you to buy a new one if you didn't purchase the 'optional' 3-year warranty

Kill yourself if you can't live without a smart phone
