There's also a maps app for android called "OsmAnd" on fdroid and its similar to gmaps but uses open street map. For navigation it works surprisingly well imo
Maybe wrong but I don't think DDG's projects are open source so better to use Open Street Maps (OSM) if you're looking to get off Google.
Frankly though unless you're very anti-tracking I'd suggest sticking with Google Maps for normies. OSM has the information but none of the clients are very good.
Right but if the source code isn't available, you never know. I never recommend proprietary software solutions unless there isn't a FOSS alternative.
I'm not saying with certainty that their code isn't available, I just don't see the search on their github.
They use Apple maps for their maps. It's fine to look something up but rough and I hate the thought of supporting Apple. Apparently they are so "privacy" focused now.
They are privacy focused, is it as private as running all those services yourself? obviously not. But they've done more at pushing privacy then any of the big tech companies.
As far as Apple maps goes, I've been using them for almost 2 years now, it's replaced google maps for me. Having said that I've heard in some countries it's not as good
