I want nationwide fiber. I see it like electricity or plumbing. It's one of the few areas that I think the initial construction should be paid for with taxes, and then they should allow anybody to utilize the infrastructure and create an ISP. This is how it's done in South Korea. It's the right blend of government subsidy and private competition. No wonder AT&T doesn't want it, it jeopardizes their monopoly.
From the way AT&T is run, i suspect the lack of efficiency and overall chaos in their company prevents them from embracing new technology - they can only fear not being able to handle it, since they don't handle current technology well.
