Yet Apple is allowed to operate in China and Google is not (Google Maps over there is operated by a Chinese company under license), so that really says a lot on which company is more privacy-friendly. [Apple doesn't actually care about your privacy](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=shxTTon5lfs).

Yes, this should not be taken as Apple promotion. But since both phone OS give exactly the same features, that 20x more Google sends is insane and undeniably not necessary for the user.
8
I question how true that actually is though. I wonder if it's bloated by people using Google Maps which of course is going to result in traffic from your device to Google.

We're not exactly sure what 20x could mean. 20x could mean 20x more pings of the same data over and over again and most of it is junk like device states and location. Apple could very well be sending more critical usage less often. A measure like 20x doesn't mean anything unless we know exactly what's being said. Edit* as it turns out this was exactly the case, with apple sharing MORE sensitive data like location due to their implementation of the "Find my" feature as part of an ad-hoc mesh network.

That’s because China told the tech companies if they want to operate in China they gotta keep Chinese citizens data on China servers not in US servers. So apple too their China customers stuff and moved them to China
2
I would bet money the CCP can peek in at that userdata at any time too.

Apple sends your IP address and whatever app you open unencrypted on a kernel level (no way to bypass it with vpns or proxies)
2
Pi hole could block that .. but only while connected to your own wifi.
1
If it doesn't connect, the apps won't start. Thanks big sur(veilance)
1
So apps don't work if there's no internet on iphone?
2
The feature is disabled if it isnt connected to the internet, but it blocks it if it is connected but not to the spy server

There's really in need of de google phones or OS.

There already is, buy a Pixel and flash GrapheneOS. Not only is that a deGoogled ROM, but Pixels are one of the only Android phones where you can sign an OS with your own keys and relock the bootloader on those user keys; GrapheneOS utilizes this feature.

Ok but why do that I get people stealing your data is bad but the apps and general ux ui would just be trash in comparison. The reason so many companies get away with this is they offer a product that's easy to access reliable and fun to use. Its. tradeoff many people make knowingly because at the end of the day it's definitely bad to "steal" data but it doesn't really interupt your day to day life that much. A lot of us are just trying to focus on our career and families and would like a option to not have our data stolen but don't really see stuff like this as a good option.
1
Because you actually have a private device, plus the UI is literally going to be the same as the Pixels and if you really want to you can install MicroG to have some Google on your phone.
2
But can you have any of the same apps?
2
Depends on what you want, iirc even Google Maps is working on MicroG now. Remember that GrapheneOS **is** based on Android so Android apps will install just fine.

Huh no shit good to know thanks man

I'm literally posting this from a grapheneOS pixel on the ruqqus app. Install fdroid and Aurora droid for Foss apps install aurora store for a googless appstore. Also a lot of apps say they need google services to run. They dont. Discord and ONX hunt are the only apps that are broken for me. My banking app, fitness apps, finance apps from the aurora store all work just as they did on googles OS. I don't even use microg as there are security concerns with it and google services in general

Use CutTheCord it has a way to bypass the need to have Gapps.

Would like to use de google OS but am used to MiUi.
1
Is there no way to install LineageOS with MiUI?
1
Don't know.

Interesting, I may have to look into this.

Linux phones librem-5 and pinephone started to ship the last few months. Riding that inconvenience of existing OS options to drive development for minimalist replacement apps in those environments is the most compelling path forward.
2
Sadly the librem 5 is definitely not there for mass market. Graphene or lineage spins of android would be far better

Some discussion already here: https://ruqqus.com/+DeGoogle/post/93cu/google-collects-20-times-more-telemetry https://ruqqus.com/+Privacy/post/93ct/google-collects-20-times-more-telemetry

(I'm not a shill, not getting paid, not marketing in any way). I've been following this project nearly since it's inception: https://puri.sm/products/ Apparently they are phones made with privacy in mind, including hardware switches etc

I remember google marketing “don’t be evil “ a few years back. Didn’t last long

From what I know apple is more streamlined in their code and software. Like my Note 10 used 50gb of space just for software files. While iphones software used like 8.

This was one of the reasons why I switched to iOS last year - other reason being the lack of decent Android phones lately that aren't from Chinese companies like OnePlus. While it's not the gold standard in privacy, I do have a little bit more trust in Apple than I have over Google at this point, particularly when they'll give pushback at the FBI for a request to decrypt locally stored data like they did for the San Bernardino shooter. I did disable iCloud though, backing up my files to my self-hosted Nextcloud instead. There's also a way to set up the phone without logging into an Apple account, issue is though that you won't be able to download apps.
2
That just shows that Google really cares.
2
The issue here is that they pretty much collect the same stuff but google didn't optimize the data. Edit: also most of the things they shown to collect, I really don't care about. They can collect all that crap all day long. Like oh no. They have my local IP. They gonna ddos me phone. Or my imei number. Literally they already had that before I got the phone. A lot of people are this chart of what is collected and freak out but in reality there is very little to be done with it.

Both should die in a fire

I hope they get those Pinephones ready for daily use soon.
