If you go to the repository they are talking about in the article it literally has commits made last week
https://github.com/signalapp/Signal-Server
Comment on that article:
"You're a bit late; they've already pushed their changes as of today. It looks like they have been working on mobile payments for at least a year (which has just been announced in beta), so it seems likely they were avoiding pushing anything until they were ready to announce that feature"
You could also say ruqqus isn't open source just because @kek isn't commiting new UI to ruqqus repository
It also has multiple releases this year.
I have no clue what OP's article is on about. The very first claim in the article is demonstrably false using the link provided in the article.
Signal was never the "best alternative" in a sense of safety/privacy. It is only an easy alternative to whatsapp that you can use it and bring the normies along. If you tell family and friends to use XMPP instead, they will just think it's too much trouble and keep being Zuck's little bitches.
if you read the help section of https://cock.li it clearly states that while XMPP is offered, all of the clients are garbage. I can confirm the same. Element for Matrix is a very good client but the matrix server is a giant resource hog. if someone fixes the XMPP clients or the Matrix servers we can be rid of centralization but until then only things like Signal have a chance to become popular
Technically better then Whatsapp, but anything would be. Signal is better, so why even bother with Telegram? If people will still transit from whats to something else, just go straight to a better alternative instead of risking multiple transitions, which will only encourage people to go back to Zuck's arms.
>[FYI we don't really run this code on our servers, it's an old copy without the govt backdoors in it so we can tell people we're open source.](https://github.com/signalapp/Signal-Server/pull/124/commits/5e62d98ebf202609511550ad02adc7b4446a6b47)
lmao
If you want true security you should use PGP via email or whatever communication that you prefer. It isn't convenient, but it is secure. Just make sure that you maintain control of your private key.
[Recently, I came across an interesting open-source messaging app โSessionโ by Loki Foundation, which is technically a fork of another open source encrypted messenger Signal. ](https://itsfoss.com/session-messenger/)
Yeah, but they take it to the next level by running it on their own Loki network which is basically like TOR. You can set up a Loki node and there are .Loki sites just like TOR. Meanwhile Signal operates on the clearweb.
