Ruq's Random Tech Tip: How to quickly navigate, select, and edit with your Control and Shift Keys.

Most people already probably know this, but there are those who do not. To name one, it would be my mother, who has used an iPad for so long it would seem she completely forgot any PC skills she might have had from before she used an iPad. Anyways--If you hold down the control key whilst pressing the left/right arrow key, you'll move not by character, but by word. If you do it whilst pressing the up/down arrow key, you'll skip by paragraph. This makes it simple to get to the start or finish of words, as well as quickly get around to a different word or area. If you hold down shift whilst pressing ANY arrow key, your cursor will move and correspondingly select the text. If going up or down it will select from where your text cursor was, going through all the text to the new cursor position. Try it and see what I mean. Both of these keys can be also held together to do both effects at once. And it doesn't just apply to the arrow keys either, Control + Backspace will delete by word, rather than simply deleting one character. Be careful with this combo though, but of course Control + Z is always your friend. I spell out control entirely to make the language here as simple as possible, but it's usually abbreviated as either "CTRL" or "^". The latter character is usually in more advanced environments. I apologize, I don't intend to insult anyone's computing intelligence. I'm simply trying to be as basic as possible. So to summarize everything: * Control + ANY arrow key = Move around by word/paragraph. * Shift + ANY arrow key = Select as the text cursor moves. * Control + Shift + ANY arrow key = Combine the features of the above two commands. * Control + Backspace = Delete by word, rather than the usual character. * Control + Z = Undo.

No, sfaik this applies to any OS. P.S. whoops except Control Z, that would be Command Z on a mac.

All of them use Command instead of Ctrl on a Mac, or if you're using a PC keyboard on a Mac, the 'Windows Logo' key is recognized as Command on macOS.

It is called super key on Linux. Sure wish we'd all call it the same thing. I'd compromise by calling it 'command' if that meant we were are being consistent.

Ah! I assumed the ctrl to move around would've worked too on mac. I haven't used mac in forever.

I rely on these shortcuts daily... if Microsoft decides to remove them one day, i'll probably loot their headquarters. (Note NSA agents: that was a joke)

hotkeys ftw

many of these also work in Windows and Linux. I have abused my mouse clicking finger, so am trying to only use the keyboard. Makes things faster, for sure - if and when you master keyboard shortcuts. Not all programs have the exact same shortcuts, but they share most of them. Does anyone know the shortcut for Open Recent?!

or use mouse

Less efficient, but that works too.
