VPN Recommendations?

6    26 Apr 2021 17:16 by u/None

I've been using and enjoying Mullvad VPN for a year or so, but it has become a bit of a hassle. Many sites will block me from accessing them even if I am using a vpn exit point in the us. An example of this would be gun related websites. Other websites think I'm in Romania, no matter where my exit point is. That sort of stuff. I assume that kind of stuff is not to be expected while using a VPN, so I'm looking to change it up. I use protonmail so perhaps I should give their vpn a try, but any recommendations?

ProtonVPN works great for me. With the addition of adblock I don't have any issues.

Best part is it has a free teir that's actually good. You mainly just need to pay for torrenting and better speeds.

Mullvad is a good one, well regarded by the privacy community. There was a really detailed list on That One Privacy Site, but it was merged with SafetyDetectives.com and seems less reputable now. You can still view the old list (last updated 12/19/2019) [here](https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1L72gHJ5bTq0Djljz0P-NCAaURrXwsR1MsLpVmAt3bwg/edit#gid=0) paperplans5 on /r/vpn also made an updated [VPN Comparison Table](https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1L72gHJ5bTq0Djljz0P-NCAaURrXwsR1MsLpVmAt3bwg/edit#gid=0) you may want to check out.

Yeah, I'd really like to stay with mullvad. But I'm having to turn it off more often lately due to sites blocking it. I'll check out the table, thanks.

I've been using Private Internet Access for the last 4 years or so and it's been very good. App works on Linux/Mac/Windows/Android/Apple, and you can also run it off of your router if desired.

Didn't PIA get bought out?

Yes, I was aware of that when it happened and at the time was considering switching providers, however I've paid attention to their update cycles, practices, and their general stance on things since that time and so far have no reason to doubt them.

PIA is ok or just use Tor. Some sites blocking you will happen regardless of VPN provider, maybe not as much if you go with a really expensive provider. Lots of abuse comes through VPNs.

Didn't know that, thanks. I'll have to do more research before I throw mullvad under the bus. Is it normal to show up not from the US even if you're set to a US point, though?

I've had that happen with a couple of different providers. Not sure what causes it, but it always feels weird... could be traffic being diverted, but how could you prove it? Try another server and see if that helps.
