I want to run home servers, so yes having a high speed upload to match would make that very doable.

If i can get near symmetrical gigabit over fiber, in Canada (and we love our telecommunications big black fist it seems) the US should be able to do so much better. Furthermore, do you really want taxpayer subsidized internet? Sounds like a bad idea to me, all data could end up re-routed directly to the NSA

Tax payer money gets spent on bullshit all the time, at least now there's something worth investing in, also who's to say that ISPs aren't already working with the NSA.

I get that tax payer money is spent on things. Like roads, and I can avoid driving into an NSA building with paper copies of my search history. So no, I really don't think government subsidies are great for internet services.
