How to Control a DC Motor (Or Motors) Using Your Raspberry Pi

I had been looking into the Raspberry Pi out of curiosity and I can see why people in tech love to go on about it so much. Since I'm that much of a crazy I've been looking into PCBs generally and how they're made and I've always wondered whether it's possible to build your own PC from absolute scratch and it makes me wonder if trying to mimic a Raspberry Pi would be a good place to start.
I realise It's likely going to be extremely complicated but I'm still fascinating by it lol and I could see especially with being able to control motors and things like that how useful it could be. Say the world ended tomorrow, would any of us even know how to rebuild something like this and get our technology back? I wouldn't be surprised if most knowledgeable people would just get wiped out of existence and we'd be back in the stone age.
