Confession from (ex)moderator and 'bot master' of r/MarchAgainstTrump

177    12 May 2017 16:07 by u/Wondermonkeydans *

###u/Wondermonkeydans here, the guy who got accused of being the ['bot master'](https://www.reddit.com/r/TheseFuckingAccounts/comments/6afukb/long_post_group_of_submission_bots_being_used_by/) of MAT. This post will hopefully clear everything up, I'm not going to be hiding anything, and will be telling the full truth. *I've also removed myself from the mod team. There's too much shady shit going on, especially with ban evasion. Like really, if you're going to evade a Reddit ban, don't pick the same name but with an underscore after it...* **You were right, u/ggggnut, some good detective work.** So here's the full story; I don't remember exactly when, but a couple of months ago I became a mod of MAT and /r/redonkulous. At this point, MAT was at around 10k subs and u/SnusTheMus was the head mod. For about a week I posted 5 articles a day, which I was told was the requirement for a moderator. I eventually suggested to Snus that I create a bot that reposts from certain subreddits to redonkulous to keep the flow of posts up, which he thought was a good idea and so I implemented it. The whole point of redonkulous was that things could be reposts, and so I thought there would be no harm in doing this. Snus then requested I do one for MAT, and so with no questions asked I did. I can't tell you why, I think I just wanted to suck up to him for full perms of an ever growing subreddit, which I ended up getting. The bots I made broke no rules of Reddit, and just used a few simple IFTTT recipes. For a while, my main account was automatically posting to MAT and redonkulous, but as it cluttered up my profile page, I made u/cereal-reposta and spread the posts across these two accounts. As time went on, more accounts were made for posting, eventually reaching 5. /u/theiastjedi u/cereal-reposta /u/thisisnatyocheese and u/micro_west. A couple of days ago I deleted the IFTTT recipies, sent a message to the head mod saying I was resigning as I didn't agree with what was happening, and started to delete posts from the accounts. Clearly I lack willpower, as he managed to convince me to come back as a mod, and remake the bots. I agreed on a few conditions. One, that he would tell me in complete honesty if there was any vote manipulation going on, two, that he was fully honest with people about the accounts , and three, that I could clear it with the admins to double check that it wasn't against any rules. I re-activated two of the accounts, and messaged the admins. I still haven't got a response from them, and doubt that I will get one. That's the full story, I have now deleted the IFTTT recipes and left as a moderator of the subreddit. Leave any questions you have below and I will answer honestly. TLDR/FAQ *Does MAT use bots for posting content?* Yes. *Does MAT use bots for upvotes?* To the best of my knowledge, no. I explicitly asked the current head mod of the sub to tell the if there was any sort of vote manipulation going on, and he told me there wasn't, which I believe. *Did u/Wondermonkeydans setup the bots?* Yes. *Was u/Wondermonkeydans paid to setup the bots?* No.

Everybody, he's the real deal. Together with /u/GregariousWolf, /u/ggggnut did all the heavy lifting analyzing MarchAgainstTrump's irregular posting patterns, which is what brought us to this point.
35
If you hadn't made that post, I probably wouldn't have come forward, take my gold
13
You seem like a legitimately good person. Cheers.

Feels good, man!

So wait. This is an admission that he created bots that are allowed on Reddit and follow Reddit Rules? Also that no mods at MAT do any vote manipulation? OK. Just wanted to check.
20
TIL astroturfing, brigading, and spamming are "following" Reddit's rules. No, fuck off, stop lying.
17
As long as it's anti-Trump it's in accordance with reddits rules. The ends justify the means.
21
Oh hi barawo, I see your meltdown is continuing. Isn't it time to give it up? you're being disavowed by your own network of anti-Trump subs, at this point not even your friends are left as allies, your former mods are coming clean on your bullshit, you should realize the gig is up.
-10
You keep going. You have been accusing me of shit for weeks. Yet somehow. I am still not banned or suspended. Thats because I have done nothing wrong. Last time I checked the only person that was suspended by admins was one of your counterparts. Yet here I am not suspended. Thats ok though.
21
> Yet somehow. I am still not banned or suspended. Thats because I have done nothing wrong. Kek, how many MAT mods have been suspended so far? in the /r/esist disavowal thread, someone counted 9: *Example 1: /u/hazardnipt - [This WaybackMachine snapshot from January 28](https://web.archive.org/web/20170128231952/https://www.reddit.com/r/MarchAgainstTrump/) lists them as creator and moderator of MAT but they are currently suspended. The other moderator in that snapshot /u/DemocratsForJustice has deleted their account. *Example 2: /u/HandSanitizerForHate - [This snapshot from January 30](https://web.archive.org/web/20170130005001/https://www.reddit.com/r/MarchAgainstTrump/) lists them as a moderator, but they are currently suspended. *Example 3: /u/karmanautrino - [This snapshot from March 8](https://web.archive.org/web/20170308130938/https://www.reddit.com/r/MarchAgainstTrump/) lists them as a moderator, but they are currently suspended. *Example 4: /u/Ajmaee - [This snapshot from March 8](https://web.archive.org/web/20170308130938/https://www.reddit.com/r/MarchAgainstTrump/) lists them as a moderator, but they are currently suspended. *Example 5: /u/SnusTheMus - [This snapshot from March 17](https://web.archive.org/web/20170317002054/https://www.reddit.com/r/MarchAgainstTrump/) lists them as a moderator, but they are currently suspended. *Example 6: /u/bluerad0n - [This snapshot from April 7](https://web.archive.org/web/20170407170157/https://www.reddit.com/r/MarchAgainstTrump/about/moderators) lists them as a moderator, but they are currently suspended. *Example 7: /u/DeadbeatCara - [This snapshot from March 25](https://archive.is/lhIlY#selection-2553.0-2553.12) lists them as a moderator, but they are currently suspended. *Example 8: /u/ItalianPrince - [This snapshot from March 25](https://archive.is/lhIlY#selection-2553.0-2553.12) lists them as a moderator, but they are currently suspended. *Example 9: /u/Hallkirchwt - [This snapshot from February 22](https://archive.fo/ecwlW) lists them as a moderator, but they are currently suspended. > Last time I checked the only person that was suspended by admins was one of your counterparts. Yeah? which co-mod of mine is suspended again?

I keep laughing at you people. YOURE NOT FOOLING ANYONE
3
Amazing work dude!
45
How much monthly does MAT get from ShareBlue/CTR?
10
Funny how this question gets missed somehow.
3
I already answered it below so I didn't answer it again, I don't know if MAT is associated with outside sources, I didn't see anything that would suggest they are, but I'm not ruling it out and I'm not defending them
6
I find it very hard to believe that you don't know. If your counter parts were getting paid and you weren't, you did all of that for free and that seems worse to me.
2
Yeah, fair enough, and there's nothing I can do to prove that I wasn't paid, so you'll just have to decide to believe me or to not believe me :)
28
What was your motivation for all this ? The widespread consensus among redditors is that ShareBlue/CTR/external forces play a role in the upvoting of the anti Trump content. While you were a mod, did you come across any evidence for this kind of manipulation?
16
> What was your motivation for all this? Fake internet points, and the fact that I'd be an essential part of a large subreddit, as the bots provided most of the content. Looking back, I realise how dumb that sounds. > The widespread consensus among redditors is that ShareBlue/CTR/external forces play a role in the upvoting of the anti Trump content. While you were a mod, did you come across any evidence for this kind of manipulation? I've seen all the conspiracy theories, and have always actively looked for things that might lead to them being true, but I didn't ever see anything that might suggest any involvement from external forces. And imho, the comments from moderators seemed too immature and unprofessional at times for anything like that

Honestly no idea at this point
1
> Fake internet points, and the fact that I'd be an essential part of a large subreddit This is the summary of why Reddit sucks so hard. Honestly why did you waste so much of your life for Reddit karma and astroturf? They have turned this shithole medium into the most massive MMORPG for mega-nerd, geeks, outcasts, pedophiles, immature political shills, racists. Most normal people post on Reddit and probably get sick of such games, leaving only the outcasts and agenda pushers to tilt at it.
1
Why are you on Reddit if it 'sucks so hard'?
19
>For about a week I posted 5 articles a day, which I was told was the requirement for a moderator Told by who? That's a bit of a strange requirement, no?
12
Told by Snus, the head mod at the time. He wanted moderators for content more than moderators for moderating
13
Thanks for coming and posting this, but you understand that there statistically HAS to be vote manipulation happening, right?
8
:) I have my suspicions, as it does seem weird that some posts get to the front page whilst others barely break 100 upvotes, but I didn't focus on that too much as I don't have definite proof pointing towards or against vote manipulation
23
There have been posts with an impression rate of 90% of the subs total subscribers in under 2 hours of it being posted, with upvotes going from 2 digits to 5 digits within the span of a half hour. I mean, if it weren't being manipulated, we would see it happening ANYWHERE else on reddit (with the exception of the other anti trump subs that are being botted).
8
I have a genuine question /u/Wondermonkeydans If MarchAgainstTrump doesn't use bots for upvoting then how come every 24 hours there's exactly 1 post on the top of it with ~25K upvotes?
4
My genuine answer to this is that I don't know, but it's super sketchy and one of the reasons I decided to leave.
7
I'm a bot, *bleep*, *bloop*. Someone has linked to this thread from another place on reddit: - [/r/subredditdrama] [u\/Wondermonkeydans , ex-enoughTrumpSpam mod, explains how they mod team used bots to manipulate votes in their Subreddit. \[REMOVED FROM \/r\/BestOff\]](https://np.reddit.com/r/SubredditDrama/comments/6at84c/uwondermonkeydans_exenoughtrumpspam_mod_explains/) - [/r/the_donald] [Confession from (ex)moderator and 'bot master' of r\/MarchAgainstTrump • r\/RedditCensors Delete if repost.](https://np.reddit.com/r/The_Donald/comments/6astwb/confession_from_exmoderator_and_bot_master_of/) - [/r/uncensorednews] [Confession from (ex)moderator and 'bot master' of r\/MarchAgainstTrump • r\/RedditCensors](https://np.reddit.com/r/uncensorednews/comments/6asw62/confession_from_exmoderator_and_bot_master_of/) [](#footer)*^(If you follow any of the above links, please respect the rules of reddit and don't vote in the other threads.) ^\([Info](/r/TotesMessenger) ^/ ^[Contact](/message/compose?to=/r/TotesMessenger))* [](#bot)

/u/wondermonkeydans Now look at this. Either you are a troll, an idiot or a middle schooler... and im not sure which is worse in a political discussion
1
I am none of the above but thanks for your input
6
Well the least I can say is at least you owned up to it.
10
Only to a small part of it. He's basically OJ and just published "If I Did It".
4
Which part did I miss out, exactly? I've posted everything that I did, and I'll answer any questions you have
11
> Does MAT use bots for upvotes? > To the best of my knowledge, no. I explicitly asked the current head mod of the sub to tell the if there was any sort of vote manipulation going on, and he told me there wasn't, which I believe. "I asked OJ if he killed those people. He said no and I choose to believe him"... Now we just need your follow up post where you say: ... "but if I did use them for vote manipulation, I would have done it like this"

I'm glad that you realized the mistake and have taken steps to correct it. A lot of people in March Against Trump would have never done that and would continue to believe that internet points actually mean something (they don't). You don't have to take the redpill if you don't want to, but at least you saw your mistake and tried to correct it instead of doubling down on it. It takes balls (or whatever your preferred gender calls your genitalia) to do that, and it shows your growth as a person.
6
> I'm glad that you realized the mistake and have taken steps to correct it. He started wiping the server with a rag but got caught before he was done and has since reactivated some of the bots. So no, that has not happened.
4
> has since reactivated some of the bots No, I haven't. And, I could have easily ignored the claims and carried on with the posts but I decided to make this post instead.
1
> Clearly **I lack willpower**, as he managed to convince me to come back as a mod, and **remake the bots**. **I agreed** on a few conditions. One, that he would tell me in complete honesty if there was any vote manipulation going on, two, that he was fully honest with people about the accounts , and three, that I could clear it with the admins to double check that it wasn't against any rules. So you're denying this quote from yourself in your own post?
2
Sorry, I thought you meant that I reactivated the bots after making this post. Yes, I did reactivate the bots after deactivating the first time

I have no relation to CTR or ShareBlue, and if I did I wouldn't be coming forward with this information, would I? But ok.

> Why should I believe your stated motivations considering you made it a point to spend hundreds of hours spamming lies and propaganda that "just happen" to conveniently perfectly line up with their shill talking points? You have a good point, and I realise that I'm not in a position to ask you to believe me, so all I can say is this: I created these bots for internet points, internet points which mean literally nothing. It took me a couple of hours to setup, and the content posted by them had nothing to do with me, I didn't regulate it. Honestly, I hated most of the content that became popular, as it was mainly just 'upvote if you h8 Trump' type stuff, but I didn't do anything about it at the time. All I can do now is apologize

I think it's kind of sad how much time you dedicate to moderating subs. I used to laugh about the whole concept of reddit "super moderators", but now I just feel pity for them.
4
Welcome to the redpill path.
2
But why would this change somebodys political ideology? This isn't going to change anybodys view on big government. I mean, what is a red pill at this point?
3
Well you answered your second question with the first. Secondly, here is a guy who is seeing firsthand the kind of propaganda being shoved into reddit. He's seeing what would happen if those who believe the kind of thing r/enoughtrumpspam does gain actual power. It's a real eye opener. Anyway, that's what I meant. It's not meant to start a general debate. If you want that, head on over to r/capitalismvsocialism
2
Nah capitalism all the way. Competition is key. >Well you answered your second day question with the first. But what does this even mean? I would rather pay higher taxes to help out my fellow Americans and local community, rather than cut them off of any support altogether just to save myself a few bucks. That doesn't seem very Christian of us. So then, why would a single post on reddit suddenly change anybodys political mindset?? It wont... because some people are in it for themselves, and some are in it for their community. You can decide what you are here for
2
Well I'm not Christian so I'm not going to judge their merits on charity, I understand they do a lot though. The red pill means to change ones ideology. You answered the second question with the first.
3
Well the least I can say is at least you owned up to it.
3
I don't know you from Adam, but it takes some integrity to come forward with something like this. Cheers.
3
Use your botting powers for good, not evil
3
Im liberal as fuck but even I would say that this kid is a literal middle school cuck. Ya fucked up kiddo
2
Yup. I know I fucked up, that's why I came forward
3
Uhhh forgive my hate that I had against you. You seem like a pretty cool guy. Thanks for coming forward.
1
On behalf of the subreddit, I thank u/Wondermonkeydans for coming forward with his evidence and helping making reddit a little bit better, and a little cleaner from manipulation. Should any other user want to come forward with evidence of malfeasance, [our modmail](https://www.reddit.com/message/compose?to=%2Fr%2FRedditCensors) is always open (and, of course, they can always post directly to our subreddit).

Anyone else suspect fishy shit on /r/politics feel free to post it /r/newaccountsinpolitics we have been around for a bit. We will open up to any other community, just label it.
