They're not being reset to zero. Look at the score on the right. If it says "50% upvoted" or lower, then that means the USERS are canceling out the votes by voting them down in equal numbers to the upvotes.
I never bought this explanation. With vote fuzzing you never have true zero, especially when the votes number in the tens of thousands. Refresh in a controversial post that's over a year old and way past voting and you'll see it fluctuate around a "true" score. That and I don't think you would be on the front page with a natural zero, even with early momentum.

Did you... code reddit?
There's no reason not to "buy" it. The score is fuzzed, sure, but I would guess that as it gets in the thousands, it gets rounded, and zero is a number I would expect something to be rounded to. But I'm not in the know, so it's all conjecture on my end.

Again, reddit's algorithm is a mystery to everyone who isn't involved. Why not? If that were the case, wouldn't EVERY post on T_D just get set to zero?
Why set ONE post to zero?
It's just /u/spez editing the DB records via some hastily written SQL to make it look like it's being downvoted. Lord knows, [he's done it before.](https://www.reddit.com/r/announcements/comments/5frg1n/tifu_by_editing_some_comments_and_creating_an/)
