/r/politics has been a complete shit show for a while. It was removed as a default sub in 2013 and is supposed to be excluded from /r/popular. I've also experience first hand the battle cry of "foreign interference" to justify suppressing opinions. In this case decussion of the recent great Facebook purge in /r/technology. I recommend trying /r/neutralpolitics if you're interested in in politics decussion.

neutralpolitics isn't much better. It's a cesspool of hardleftists who downvote anything they don't like. you don't bet called a Nazi bigot fascist there, but you still can't have grrat discussion because nothing about it is neutral

I personally haven't had a problem there. The one thing I like is that each top level comment needs to cite sources so you have much less opinion driven discussion over there. Also they explicitly state their goal is not neutrality. At least they are honest about it.

This website is a censored political ad space now.

forget this at your own peril. There is very little on this site now(other than in the smaller or niche subs) that was decided by the userbase. It is no different than going to any news website now - when you go to Fox, you see what Fox wants you to see - when you go to CNN/MSNBC/ETC you see what they want you to see, read what they want you to read and think about stories the way they want you to think about those stories.

I hate to say it, but actual intelligent debate died a long time ago on reddit. Probably about 9 years ago I could have a debate with center-left libertarian types on /r/politics and others. I actually learned a lot from them. Nowadays politics aren't debated on reddit with the exception of a few heavily moderated subs. What actually happens is users try to prove that their "opponent" is their moral inferior, or a bigot of some form, or what ever other undesirable label. I used to talk about politics on a lot of subs. I have come to realize that it's just not possible to convince anybody of anything on reddit since users will stubbornly stay their ground and try to do anything possible to make themselves look correct. Not prove anything about their world view. Make themselves look correct. Therefor just pick a sub that you agree with and lurk. Don't comment. It's the best way to do politics on reddit.

Weird how only right wing subs that are open to any kind of debate have been the ones getting banned. Free speech does not exist under leftist comment sections.

Socialism is the opposite of individualism so this is to be expected.

no one wants to talk about politics because these days you've already decided that the color you chose does everything right and the color you didn't choose does everything wrong.

nothing is static in people or politics though. 10 years ago, i identified quite proudly as a fiscal conservative and socially moderate liberal. the left of today is a complete fucking freakshow and the gop has shifted towards more progressive views pretty significantly. it wasn't long ago that gwb literally tried to pass a fucking **constitutional amendment** to ban gay marriage.

I honestly think that Reddit is a reflection of diminishing standards in "higher" "education".

i'd said and done some fairly cringy stuff in my teens and 20's. gen z kids are fucking borderline retarded compared to my generation. and it's not a matter of me gaining any significant amount of wisdom or newfound perspectives. people are just really, really dumb these days.

the entire design of reddit is intrinsically designed for censorship. the downvote feature has fuckall to do with "spam" or shitposts. it's to silence any and all dissent until thought crimes and wrongthink get literally hidden. getting rid of the downvote feature alone would instantly weed out the morons and force people to actually engage in discussions.

I think part of the reason is because a lot of people migrated to T_D which is now one of the top 3 most active subs on the site.

Not to be rude but you're really late to this. It's been going on a long time. Even prior 2016 but with Trump a lot of things like this because obvious.
2
Exactly, this has been going on for a long, long time here but Trump just set them into overdrive, and since then it has been watching them stumble face-first into idiocy.... but lets not forget what reddit did in the 08 election.

>Conservative and centrist comments are downvoted to oblivion and there is no way to express your opinion. This applies to many subs, they only allow pro views and comments. These people don't like to answer the hard questions, they like to be surrounded by people who agree with them.

That subreddit has been bought and paid for by shareblue since 2016. Their entire mod team was replaced in August of 2016 and the change in tone was immediate.
1
same thing happened to the_donald, it's basically worthless trash like the rest of reddit now. The tone of the subreddit is not even recognizable to a year ago.

> Conservative and centrist comments are downvoted to oblivion Well OP you’re definitely half right
