Comment on: F*** You, I Quit - Hiring Is Broken

Some companies are continually looking for people, not necessarily for a single role. I had to delay my interview a month and was told it was fine. If they had an issue with the delay, why continue the process? If you're a recruiter and believe that a month or a quarter is not acceptable, tell the candidate.

This guy asked to postpone his interview for an entire quarter. I personally would have laughed in his face and said "No thanks, we'll find someone else!"

And he would have probably thanked you for not wasting his time!

They came to him and he said I would be available after this date. I don't see where the issue is. I've delayed interviews due to time conflicts and I let the recruiter (who approached me) know in advance. Should I just tell the recruiter to fuck off I'm busy?

Comment on: Why does the Java programming language suck so bad?

Haha, I agree. I'm of the belief, right tool for the right job, and I don't mind Java or .NET.

I'm surprised someone else didn't argue that software is crap, you need to design the hardware to do all your work!

Comment on: The programming talent myth

If management accepts that as a valid solution, then they're accepting the negative dividends going forward as a result of maintenance. At that point, it's not really your issue.

I'll generally do everything I can to stall to get a solid solution in place, because otherwise it's: ITS DOWN FIX IT FIX IT! sigh

Comment on: The programming talent myth

I'm not a full time developer, but I will write specialized business apps. As a result of my background, I've seen similar disasters. Mostly on projects that involve a 3rd party for a specialized component.

The issue is a balance between the most sound, logical or even optimal approach and 'just get it done.' This is even more frightening when you have a consultant making $200-300/hr and which route do you think he'll take? It's not like he has to maintain that cluster...
