I would no more urge everyone to learn to program than I would urge everyone to learn to plumb.
That is a fantastic sentence. Great point all around. With the way people are if you teach them to plumb, you will quickly have people trying to cut the crust off their sammiches with a plunger.

I am also very unhappy with the sometimes emphasis on knowing factoids in interviews that could be looked up in 3 minutes at a desk. One time some company brought me in for an interview and I'm pretty sure they were filming me not the knowing to the answers I had written down at home for phone interviews. "Sorry dude, I don't recall what the difference between where and having is but I know where to google it."
