I work at a research and development center. I can't even tell you how many time we have had a consensus that a test or experiment was going to go one way, and then went the other. It is actually baked into the scientific method. If new evidence emerges, theories are abandoned or modified. Ex. Newtonian physics was modified/replaced by the theory of relativity. Consensus doesn't mean shit. Belief counts for nothing.
