Comment on: Any goats got a moment to help me out with Apache (.htaccess) url rewriting?

I don't have a lot of experience with IIS deployments so never got into .NET, except to fix problems for someone that had a legacy app.

I actually prefer JSP or Ruby (not RAILS!) over PHP, and one supposedly obsolete language that rocks them all for rapid deployment.

Have you tried: parse_url

https://www.php.net/manual/en/function.parse-url.php

Yeah, in a different programming language I worked in (not naming it) this is easy as pie, but in PHP, not so much.

I can see why you are focusing on doing rewrites in the .htaccess file instead of just creating a redirect engine that parses all URLs and builds the friendly URL.

Here's an interesting article that explains exactly what you are looking for:

I thought it was more for security, by hiding the structure of the application. Search engines have been able to index query strings for over 10 years now.

No, you've just replaced the query variables without disrupting the query order.

If the order stays the same, then it doesn't matter what the variable is.

This is an Alias. You're just translating the query.

Forget using .htaccess, create a config.php file, require it once on every request and do your $_GET magic there.

Your talking about aliasing.

No link needed, he's asking about rewrite rules.

Comment on: Can you get a job as a self-taught programmer?

I did, and I worked in an office where out of 7 programmers only two had any academic training in it, and only one had a degree.

Company was a startup that went Fortune 500after a few years.

Comment on: Is it possible to transfer software to a new computer?

Normally, you license the use of the software, what hardware you put it on is immaterial. Some licenses (like Adobe), allow you to install on two devices, as long as you only use them one at a time.

Also, there are other software that requires a license for every CPU core, so you can't just make a blanket statement about it.

On top of this, if you don't uninstall correctly, you can violate the validation method of some types of software and then you have a headache trying to reinstall it on something else.

It pays to read the license.

It depends on the license agreement the the validation method.

No kidding, if your physical location is hosed, then you are hosed.

Shoot, I used to do that on a weekly basis... clumsy fingers.

If you're using denyhosts, you can whitelist yourself..

Comment on: Of course, I never do this...

Also, what you are up against is ignorance and hope.

You're dealing with people looking for a solution, but ignorant as to how to find it, they have a hope that you as the programmer owns magic, they are not even listening to what you are saying, every time you speak, the eyes glaze over, they just have hope.

Your only salvation is a really glib salesman to salve over all the disappointment.

I indentify with that Dilbert, only the bad-mouther was a dweeb with no where near my programming skills.

Guy couldn't SQL in a relational way if his life was in jeopardy..

Comment on: I guess he prefers Ruby

I think what happened was he told his mother he wanted to become a Java developer, so she bought him that book and told him "it's the same thing".
