I use LinuxMint for an alternative/hobby desktop. Have been playing with and using Linux in general for a long time, but I'm an enthusiast, so that sort of thing comes easy. There is no way the average Mac or Windows consumer is going to be able to figure it out or use it without becoming frustrated - even with the amazing ease of LinuxMint.

I like the spirit of the editorial, but most people couldn't do that even with at step-by-step guide. Plus, Windows is spying on you constantly unless you disable a bunch of services. So, Linux? No gonna happen.
