I tried starting with Python, but because I'd never actually programmed (only markup like HTML/CSS) I wasn't sure what was going on. JavaScript is my first programming language and I love it. Super easy syntax, and I think it's helped me get the hang of the basics enough to move onto other things in the right state of mind.

I don't know if I'd call these folks "trolls," because the goal of a troll is to intentionally anger someone else. These folks are just douches and, honestly, are the reason why I've never contributed (only lurked) SO when I needed programming help.
I like how you approached this. =P
