So what I do is I use Open Source code, improve it and give the results as feed back to developers that wants it. If they want to implement it they can, but I am not going to do it. I am going to focus on my projects. I work at my time and pace, when I want.

Gnome 3 has been making big strides since it first released as a Desktop Environment. Fedora has always been close with the Gnome shell and the two of them together make a pretty compelling desktop experience.
It's amazing how applicable this is to IT in general. Specialized knowledge of relevant systems is important, but you always expect to have to learn a lot about your new environment anyway.
