Comment on: What is the very first thing for an old fart like me to learn so I can dabble in programming?

Building small web pages is a great way to see some quick results from your efforts. A few lines of a code in a text editor saved in an HTML file and a web browser to review the results are all that's needed. https://www.codecademy.com/ provides really nice free tutorials and https://www.w3schools.com/ is a great reference.

Comment on: A "final solution" to the image hosting problem

However as I write this post that site appears to be down for the first time in my experience.

Actually if voat included an ipfs node as part of the site you could write a small script (or htaccess) to automatically swap out any external image host for https://voat.co/ipfs/your_image_hash#.jpg. It would make voat the coolest image host online. Images would only be unavailable on voat if the entire site were down. I can't imagine that ever happening. 😏

I will check my own bits at the door thank you very much.

I am a huge ipfs fan. This still probably requires a change to voat as references to an ipfs hash still needs a domain on the front end. The nice thing is the hash still works with any domain setup as a node. My fav is http://ipfs.pics.

I have been doing a little hack that still allows for voat's preview feature. Check it out...

Fun fact. I originally found the above image at https://ipfs.pics. However as I write this post that site appears to be down for the first time in my experience. So I found http://www.badoit.me/ which appears to be running the same open source code as ipfs.pics. I popped in the hash after the domain and badoit.me redirected to ipfs.io and is displaying the image off of what I can only assume is the ipfs p2p network. The "permanent" web in action!

Comment on: Brave browser posts info on testing Chrome extensions

I get the need to use a fun fruffy lightweight extension to show off the process, but I couldn't be more disappointed that it was the Tabby Cat screenshot the got the thumbnail for my post.

Comment on: Open source versus corporate interest

I am surprised at how much trust is placed in GitHub from avowed open source evangelists. The npm debacle is a quick preview of what it looks like when things go wrong.
