People have known the world was round since the ancient Greeks... even with Christopher Columbus's pitch for circumnavigating the world, the lack of interest wasn't because people thought the world was *flat*, it was because they (correctly) thought it was far larger than Columbus's calculations showed; if it hadn't been for the undiscovered Americas, he and his crews would have died on the ocean because of his miscalculations.
