Expand tabs to spaces, set soft tabstop to 4. Indent with tab or >>. Vim's pretty powerful out of the box.

What exactly are you trying to learn? What's your experience in the field? Sounds like you might've hit a wall that's a little too tricky to just jump. I'd be happy to try to help point out some footholds.

It took some practice for me. I moved to IntelliJ from Eclipse from BlueJ (which, although "required" for my CS class, I ignored). I thought it looked pretty, and then I found that it had Vim keybindings, so I stayed.
