Comment on: Whats a good tea to drink when programming?

Something you're willing to drink cold when you inevitably forget about it.

Comment on: What is the currently least SJW cucked repository for a small FOSS project

Use straight git if you can. I have gitlab bookmarked for personal use, and I have seen gitgud promoted on a site that has more hate speech then voat.

Comment on: Are programmers degrees being called engineers now?

There are computer science degrees that have IT professionals, coders, sys admins, etc.

There are also computer/systems/software engineering degrees, that depending on nation, will require accreditation, and "engineer" may or may not be a legally protected title, like doctor, architect, lawyer, etc.

Engineer also sounds better then code money. And with all the mobile programs, and websites, "developer" has lost its appeal.

Comment on: Have you ever used imaginary numbers in code?

Frequency analysis in images, and audio. And yeah, a place holder "im" is usually enough to do the equations needed.

Comment on: Do you need an advanced degree to work with "cooler" things like AI and Machine Learning?

Undergrads can work summer internships with the advanced robotics/machine learning/big data research groups on campus. If you are willing to do the work, the readings, and most importantly the time, you can compete in competitions, or build hobbyist projects. Most applied AI is found within games, and an undergrad degree + skill/completed projects will get you further then a masters + no experience outside academia. Hell, with enough experience in security, you might be one to write white papers like this one. 0x00 is right on the money with their advice.

That all being said, if you want to work with the more abstract, theoretical algorithms, and resources, there is a reason why grad school is a major option. There are more labs, other students/researchers/profs that are all part of the support network, as well as a strong competitive undercurrent that keeps everyone looking up to date on the most recent papers, and tech, to make an impression, first or sustained, in the field.

Comment on: I hope one day I'll live in a country where I have freedom to write any code I like without fearing.

It was only one part of the project, it was ported to windows, android, among other aspects, including being available for linux.

Wanting to circumvent state censorship is not platform dependent. And occasionally, if you want to create tools for people at large to use, you allow for the option of not having to replace their phones.

Comment on: Does anyone have good resources for robotics programming?

Personal projects that can make use of 3D printing or something more industrial/academic? The different resources are usually board/controller dependent.

Without knowing anything about you, other then what you said, I would probably point you towards the rasberry pi class of diy. it means getting your hands on hardware relatively quickly, and gets you used to the basics.

Comment on: In light of GitHub's recently-announced anti-straight-white-male Code of Conduct, I'd like to reiterate some alternatives to them.

frankenmine covers the actual CoC quite well.

In addition, you have major "events" recently happening when so called "social justice warriors" have clashed with "the stereotypical (possibly libertarian leaning due to open source) coder" on open source projects that can provide a little bit of a background environment to this all.

Opal Issue 941. The FreeBSD Chatlog. Or effectively removing someone from the python cuba group for criticising a block list that was used for the OSCON twitter handle that blew up on twitter, which is better documented in a series of python cuba emails, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, with a tweet. These are just some examples, coupled with the most recent see what happens when due to content restrictions, we can't use terms like "retards", so lets call everyone "gits" instead.

So yeah, when you look at reddit, at github, at what the message is being pushed in the media, you are starting to see a cultural shift for a more strict, less wild west internet (and this is coming from someone who lives in a country that has codified criminal hate speech, and online harassment). The fact that the hacker manifesto flat out calls this debate as bullshit is telling. And yes, I first was introduced to through the movie Hackers, but is better seen in action by Julia Stiles.

If you really want a too long, didn't read: you are seeing, distilled into its purist, most nonsensical form, fascists versus anarchists. Or authoritarians versus libertarians. EDIT: Made some spelling mistakes. Woops.

Comment on: the big list of programming and computing subverses

There are some niche verses that might warrant some love, from /v/cryptography, /v/datamining, /v/code, /v/reverseengineering. /v/defcon should get some more content extremely soon. Though I do say this as someone who has literally just started /v/compscipapers, as I really like reading papers, but was hesitant in contacting some mods for fear of stepping on people's toes. EDIT: And it was more just not having all the relevant submissions yet submitted to showcase diverse topics (I know I am biased in what I read, and have read), as well as needing to branch out to track down decent white papers from companies.

Comment on: Computer Programming to be renamed Googling Stackoverflow

“We are also considering renaming “P-values” to “Reviewer Pacifiers”.

Gold right there.

Comment on: [META] I'm the moderator of /v/programming and pledge to be more active from now on - AMA

Appreciate the video links, that talk on SS7 looks intriguing. Always been meaning to check out the Chaos media, didn't even know about the Vintage Computing Conference Berlin, that will eat up some time as well.

Might want to sift through the comments of the posts yourself, see if there are any users that more or less are consistent in the comments as being well respected. Maybe send a message to one of the folks over at /v/algorithms if they are interested in modding more then one sub. Maybe phrase it as more looking for someone who does more CSS shenanigans, and go from there. Or, reach out to V-sync, or one of the commentators in that post if they're down for literally helping out. (EDIT: Wrote this piece before refreshed, and saw V-sync in this thread, use his skills if none others are offered).

Though I guess if there is a AMA question, what is one paper/article/defcon presentation/[insert document of your choice here] that stands out as opening your mind as to what programming can do? What is one that more people should read, or reread?

Comment on: What music do you code to?

I try to keep it to "chill edm", whether it is falls into synth wave, retro new wave, outrun, glitchhop, trip hop. Helps to think I am coding the future. This is an album I have on repeat today. EDIT: to include the link. As an apology, here is another I have listened to.
