Comment on: Navidrome - open source software that allows you to enjoy your music collection from anywhere, by making it available through a modern Web UI and through a wide range of third-party compatible mobile apps
Yeah it sounds like this would be a good fit. A Pi is definitely capable enough to be a music server.

Looks similar, but it looks like this is just for music so it's probably a smaller/simpler code base.

Comment on: The smart home is flailing as a concept—because it sucks
You're right that cross-compatibility shouldn't be cause for complaint, different competing standards are fine. But any "smart home" device that doesn't use a common open standard sucks. If I am putting in a "smart light switch" it better damn well work with the light bulbs I buy two decades from now.

Comment on: Banned from Reddit
There are a number of ways to find out if someone is using the same device, and it's hard to circumvent. You could try using another browser that isn't based on the built-in Chrome renderer... maybe Brave or Firefox. If that doesn't work, buy an old $20 throwaway phone on eBay?

Oh they definitely are scare quotes, the writer is obviously hostile to the concept. But it's good to see that Substack is still getting press and is expanding, and that free speech is being seen as a feature for certain kinds of businesses.

Comment on: CRT Degaussing With A Drill
People used to use them for high-end graphics work, but these days I doubt it. LCDs have mostly overtaken them in pixel density and of course weight. I looked and the only thing I could find was "new old stock" which is getting insanely expensive now.

Comment on: California and five other US states ban pre-built gaming PCs based on energy standards - in December standard will expand to include devices featuring high-speed networking, multi-screen notebooks, and gaming monitors
They actually define a formula for allowed power consumption: https://energycodeace.com/site/custom/public/reference-ace-t20/index.html#!Documents/section16053statestandardsfornonfederallyregulatedappliances.htm#vcomputerscomputermonitorstelevisionssignagedisplaysandconsumera5.htm This is absolutely nuts. It also mandates the following for workstations and "small-scale servers": "Transition the computer into either the computer sleep mode or computer off mode measured in Section 1604(v)(5) within 30 minutes of user inactivity." Is that going to be enforced by the hardware or software? How the fuck is that appropriate for a server?

True. I don't mind if communities of people want to build their own corners of the web like this. Although I doubt that PDF-as-the-web will catch on (PDF sucks way too much). I understand the underlying sentiment though.

Comment on: Russia's Yandex driverless robots to deliver food at U.S. colleges with GrubHub
Somewhat complicated but I'll make an effort. It's embarrassing because it's a company from a strategic competitor (Russia) deploying commercial "drone" tech that much of the world associates with the US, demonstrating that they have parity. Further, by both deploying it in the US and by focusing on college students, it works as a PR move, calling more attention to it. Finally, it will be difficult for the US to do anything about it, because we always complain when Russia limits US companies *and* our own legal system makes it difficult (see Trump's attempt to ban TikTok). So it's just sort of an embarrassment that we can't really respond to. Edit: I'll add that it's only really embarrassing because we have been blaming other countries for our own inadequacies, and Russia has been the main punching bag lately. If we could just accept that we are in economic competition and not turn it into a media circus, we wouldn't leave open opportunities for PR stunts like this.

Comment on: How Are Dead Man's Switches Set Up?
If you don't need it to trigger instantly, you could set a longer timer, which will protect you in case you are unable to get to it for a while. The most important things are to make sure nobody knows where your program is, and make sure nobody knows when it will trigger or who gets the files. This is easier if you don't disclose that you even have a dead man's switch. You can also use a red herring like telling people that your lawyer will release documents. But don't give any information that could allow an adversary to block distribution of the information.

Comment on: I am fully convinced now that computing is just modern magic.
Oh yeah I mean I understand why it happens, it's just that fixing it (from what I've read) can involve a few rounds of trial and error and a good "feel" for how the circuit will behave. In that way it's more of an art than software.

Comment on: I am fully convinced now that computing is just modern magic.
I understand just enough to know that it's voodoo bullshit. Everything looks like it's made from standardized components, but then there's small variances between the same "identical" component made by different manufacturers, components that don't meet stated specs, etc. And all the weird hacks to fix ghosts in the machine are nuts. It's apparently normal to just reroute your PCB design "until it works" if you run into EMF issues. I have immense respect for people who can put up with all that.

Comment on: I am fully convinced now that computing is just modern magic.
The hardware side is even worse. It's a miracle that anything works, honestly. In my life I have gone from knowing nothing about computers, to knowing a little, to understanding everything, to knowing nothing again. I imagine it's like that with any sufficiently deep domain of knowledge. Eventually you have to either specialize or accept that all your knowledge is somewhat shallow.

Comment on: Freenode removes hate speech rule
It's pretty confusing. To some degree the takeover (before it failed) played out like previous SJW-led subreddit and forum takeovers. I haven't seen any clear evidence of this though, and my gut feeling is that it's standard internet drama. A number of channels left for libera.chat, so maybe Andrew is trying to court right-wing tech users who do feel left out right now.

I've had that happen with a couple of different providers. Not sure what causes it, but it always feels weird... could be traffic being diverted, but how could you prove it? Try another server and see if that helps.

PIA is ok or just use Tor. Some sites blocking you will happen regardless of VPN provider, maybe not as much if you go with a really expensive provider. Lots of abuse comes through VPNs.

Half of the NSA is dedicated to securing systems, it's the other half that tries to break them. SELinux is actually a good tool. It's a little too complicated (OpenBSD's pledge and unveil are simpler) but that makes sense when you consider that they were trying to help secure all possible forms of complex corporate and government junk. The NSA can afford to put together helpful tools like SELinux because there is no shortage of other vulnerabilities to exploit, including at the hardware level.

True internet folk need to understand that ease of accessibility is a curse, not a blessing. The growth of the internet proved once again that gatekeeping has an important purpose, keeping out the masses. Other skilled professions have understood this for centuries. I'm bullish on things like +Urbit, Secure Scuttlebutt, Gemini and other less-than-friendly tech for this reason, we need an "inner domain" with an inaccessible technical barrier to block normies.
