Israel used to let in tens of thousands of Gazans for work. so not an open air prison. Israel also treated them in their own hospitals. If Hamas didnt take advantage of this to infiltrate suicide bombers and other terrorists, they would still be able to do it. The border is not closed out of sadistic means, it is closed for security. Why isnt Egypt opening their border? Why aren't Gazans allowed to work there or visit their hospitals? You see, when a neighboring country attacks yours, you close the border. And yes, like Israel isnt using its own cities and villages as cover for military activities, Hamas shouldn't too. Or maybe this is why they are categorized as a TERROR organization and not an actual army. Do you also want to talk about the thousands of rockets shot at Israel for the past 2 decades when most times Israel didnt retaliate? Which country in the world takes thousands of rockets and stays down?

Aaaand here is the point. Yes they should stand in the middle of freaking nowhere instead of doing it next to civilians on purpose. That is the definition of Human shields.

As someone who spent 3 years in Gaza, I can honestly say you are wrong.
First of all, they don't have to build military infrastructure in the middle of a neighborhood. They can place it in the outskirts of the city. They don't have to dig tunnels under schools and hospitals. They don't have to launch rockets from neighborhoods, they can do it from orchards, fields, beaches, or even less populated areas. Also note that the Rimal neighborhood where all the rich Hamas leaders lived, wasn't used for military purposes. It was still destroyed because the people living there are almost exclusively Hamas. But they were not building weapons or training there.
