Comment on: Gaming glasses for programming

What the? Something like this exists?

A quick question regarding the eye strain you're suffering from: Do you program in well lit environments? Do you use a bright or a dark color scheme for your applications?

Comment on: Github disables repository for using the word "retard."

A few days ago I created a post here to ask where I should migrate my projects I have on Github to. I knew that they would pull some crap like this sooner or later, and here we go.

The power of foresight.

It's a fundamental issue. Pushing the most upvoted post to the top (like Voat and Reddit do), creates echochambers/circlejerks. There's no way around it. These sites simply aren't great discussion platforms.

Threads on forums and image boards are much better for this, because they don't mess with the order of the posts and just leave them ordered chronologically.

they're complaining about the social issues involved in using Opal, right?

False. What the contributor said on twitter outside of the project, doesn't cause any "social issues" for using or contributing to Opal. Well, except if you're a fascist snowflake for whom differing opinions are a "social issue" that is.

Comment on: Codecha - True Programmers' CAPTCHA

Nice idea.

Needs more than one language though. I don't want to learn Python just to be able to use some website.

  • These people have proven time and time again that they're absolute lunatics when it comes to their ideology
  • The people behind GitHub have a similar political alignment
  • Other companies (the folks behind BitBucket for example) keep their politics out of their business. The GitHub blog is full of celebrate gay pride, help LGBT, diversity this, diversity that, look at how progressive we are. The BitBucket blog is filled with technology and business related stuff. Chances are better that they will keep it that way.

It's harmful to people that want to get engaged and contribute

Except it's not in any way harmful. Grown-ups can a) agree to disagree with opposing viewpoints, b) have a civil discussion or c) ignore it all together.

What happened to "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me"? Those people who get their knickers in a twist when someone has a different opinion are imbeciles.

If I worked for a company and said racist things on social media

Open source project != company. They're two completely different things.

It's your responsibility to call them out and let everyone else decide if they want to support it or not.

No, I disagree. It's not your responsibility to police all thoughts the contributors have. As long as they keep them out of the project, they're NONE of your business.

I also think any decent open source project should behave like a business, treating other contributors and downloaders with respect. Otherwise people are just going to leave and your project won't be as good as it could be.

You know what's an even better way to ruin your project? Making it clear that all the work you put in it for free doesn't mean anything and that political correctness is more important.

It's your choice to use a product, and if they're not acting in a way you agree with you can not participate.

Tell that to those people who want to get contributors banned from a project they themselves never contributed to over saying something they didn't like.

Seriously now, there's few things that are more annoying that people who get offended on behalf of others. Look at #NotYourShield. You had blacks, women and black women being shouted at and insulted because they did not get offended at what mostly white males told them they should get offended at. It was ridiculous.

I agree, but it's making me wary considering how CoCs are currently used as nothing but a power-grab by some people.

I posted it earlier, but here it is again: When these lunatics decide to target me, I'd feel much better knowing that the service is run by a company that doesn't promote this progressive bullshit itself. Github does that. Just look at their blog.

As for GitLab: I heard something about a CoC there too. Not sure though.

I used to host my git remote inside my Google Drive. While it works, it's a bit of a pita and I want to use some reliable service for that.

  • These people are mad
  • The people from Github are on the same side of the political spectrum as them
  • I do now, what I should have done before giving Github money: Looking at what the competition has to offer.

Because they're ideologues who have literally nothing else in their lives?

Comment on: Where should I migrate my projects to (from Github)?

Kind of.

However, the main reason is damage prevention. I don't want my development to rely on a company of which I know, that it falls on the same side of the ideological spectrum as those obsessives from the social justice thought police (let alone give them my money).

Considering that I didn't look at competitors back when I started using Github, I don't know how they compare to each other. I want to give them a chance now.

BitBucket is looking quite good so far. I just compared their blogs (first two pages).

BitBucket: Aside from "this year in review" everything was technology/business related

Github: A fair share of technology/business related posts, but in between we got: "Open CoC", "Support LGBT tech organizations", "Diversity Partners" and "Celebrate Pride with GitHub".

The Github blog looks like a bunch of hipsters wrote it, when compared to the BitBucket one.

it can pretty much be ignored (unless you're part of the project)

See, I'm not big on waiting till shit hits the fan before doing something. I'd rather prevent it from happening in the first place.

As for simply blocking them:

They're fucking obsessed. I wouldn't put it beyond them to send their army of social-media trolls/harassers after you for being something-ist and try to get your account banned. In that scenario I'd feel much better if I knew that the company running the service, is one to keep their politics out of unrelated things and doesn't promote progressive bullshit. Something that I cannot say about Github.

I've said before that I didn't look at the competition when I made a Github account, so other than laziness, I have no reason to stick with them. Maybe there is a better competitor in which case I'd gladly switch.

Comment on: Where should I migrate my projects to (from Github)?

It's hardly the first project.

Some Python related project (I think Django) changed the technical standard terms "master/slave" after someone got offended.

Seriously, when the CEO of a company talks about ditching the rug of the meritocracy (especially when that company is so related to the world of open source software development), things are getting out of hand. Then again, GitHub is from San Francisco and when I learned one thing during #GamerGate, it's that it's a hotspot for political idiots (seriously, I'm not making that up. It's legitimately scary).

I just want a service by a company that tries to offer the best service and keeps politics out. You know what I mean right? A professional way of running a company.

Comment on: Tonnes of resources to help learn computer programming

I disagree. Not because I think books on the subject are bad. Quite the opposite in fact: The Pragmatic Programmer - Get it, if you haven't yet.

I kind of take issue with the nature of your answer.

What I mean is that the post talks about "resources to help learn computer programming" and you replied with how to learn a new language. This isn't the same thing.

I bring it up because (especially newbies) tend to not understand that. They often ask questions like "I want to learn programming. What language should I learn?" which is the wrong way to approach this, if you're asking me.

Unless you want to become a code monkey whose only job it is to implement code, that has been given to him in form of various diagrams, you're going to need to do a whole lot more than simply learning a programming language.

To me, being a developer primarily means having a very specific way of thinking and approaching problems. Being able to solve unsolvable problems, by abstracting and breaking them down into smaller, solvable ones.

Don't learn programming languages, learn programming. The language is merely a tool.

Comment on: Tales of Programming: how Crash Bandicoot fit into 2MB, with 4 bytes to spare

Andy even controlled the physical layout of bytes on the CD-ROM disk so that—even at 300KB/sec—the PS1 could load the data for each piece of a given level by the time Crash ended up there.

Jesus christ. After that, you're a man.

Comment on: A completely web-based program for making diagrams(uml, flow charts, ...)

Used in in Uni for creating all kind of diagrams.

It's free, it's fairly intuitive, but - Jesus-Fucking-Christ - can it be a pain in the ass sometimes.

The automatic snapping left a lot to be desired back when I used it.
