because github deals with backups and uptime. It isn't just about access to a workable git. There's also the social issues of everyone and their mother is on github. Well, maybe not their mother :)

you're not factoring in the cost of maintaining that VPS.
I'm an i3 user and there's absolutely nothing I miss from using KDE/Gnome. I used to like KDE until 4.x showed up, although even then I was a bigger fan of i3. KDE 4.x jumped the shark imo.
