Comment on: GitHub - openai/jukebox: Code for the paper "Jukebox: A Generative Model for Music"
yeah I saw someone linked to a use of it and then I tried to find something of the project to post I find it to be a fascinating concept that could be great for finding more perfect forms of music, or giving sound ideas that could be worked into something else ngl though setting up and using the code looks a little daunting (to me) - does it make sense to you? I never quite understand why some devs don't prioritize setting up some kind of plug and play implementation of their project - someone in the issues was talking about setting up a GUI program to allow users to input and output some samples with ease (and I guess in the "cloud" there's a Google Collab thing that allows the average person to use the software, but I'd like to do the mixing locally if possible)

Comment on: Peloton remotely bricks treadmills for those not paying $39.99 per month
Would it be possible to load some open source software alternative? > The touchscreens on all Peloton models are Android tablets with a modified interface. McAfee found that Peloton had indeed taken the necessary security precautions and locked the tablet bootloaders so that the Android operating system could not be tampered with. > Normally, that would mean the end of the line for an attacker. Nonetheless, the McAfee researchers were able to partly boot the tablets into a different version of Android by plugging in a USB-C drive loaded with a custom bootloader and accessing the Android tablet's recovery screen by pressing the power and volume-up buttons at the same time. https://www.tomsguide.com/news/peloton-bike-plus-flaw or maybe you could just hook up an android phone or tablet that's different entirely? I dunno like to me you could just bike outside, I don't understand the interest in a stationary cycle although you can also make them in to mechanical tools (like blenders) or generate a small amount of electricity with them

Comment on: Woman sues Reddit for selective blindness to child porn on its platform
karen's just mad her ex bf released stuff in revenge, Reddit's probably not really at fault here > the social network reportedly dragged its feet in taking them down. She said sometimes they waited “several days” to look through the questionable content. She probably looked like an adult so they weren't sure if they should take it down or not, and the fault is of the person who posted it - it's the same issue of how much platforms should be responsible for what users post or not, it creates moderation issues to be too heavy against the platforms (but if you absolutely want to make sure nothing gets through, then there will have to be a trade off of lots more regulation of posting - it's unfortunate but probably there will have to be tolerance of that evil content just like if we give more freedom to buy guns, then bad people get guns - you can either have strict policies and laws and less freedom, or more freedom risking more worse issues) > Children aged from 10 to 14 constitute over a third of child porn consumers. I take fault with the ambiguous use of the world "child". Roughly 10 and up is an adolescent, that's different from a child. By this stat they probably mean that they send pictures to each other of themselves, so again that's a little different from them just seeing some kind of media with like 5 year olds, for example (it would be absurd to consider them to be "pedophiles" if they are attracted to people around their age who are underage "children", which would be normal).

Comment on: TikTok sued for billions over use of children's data
that is understandable, although still I wonder what harm is done by using data Of course I can appreciate the idea that people don't want their kids to be used just for "data" but it seems like selective outrage is data's being used everywhere (for good or ill)

Comment on: TikTok sued for billions over use of children's data
So can someone clarify what the harm is in using this data (I don't actually understand)? Also you have to be 13 to use it I think so that's adolescents/minors (I think the word "children" is a bit ambiguous, I think of like 5 year olds or something, unless they have 5 year olds on there)

Comment on: Why Everyone Should Build Their Own PC and Stop Using Macs
so would the cut off be like 2000s for continuing to use old hardware? Should older hardware be recycled as "e-waste" if it doesn't have collector value or just held on to as toys or backup if all other technology failed?

Comment on: Why Everyone Should Build Their Own PC and Stop Using Macs
ok thx @wuzizname @specklemouse too, maybe in order it can be cleaned, fan replaced, thermal paste, and hard drive (if the noise doesnt change at each step). I think it would be good to remind people that they can still run some parts of old desktops (I think there is a common view they need to be replaced, entirely, in like 4 years' time) - any tips on upgrading old desktops? Seems like there would be a market for that kind of thing but on the other hand maybe a lot more ppl use laptops and mobile today.

Comment on: Why Everyone Should Build Their Own PC and Stop Using Macs
tech support question: author talks about having a PC from 90s that he still uses, but I know of this old PC from 90s/2000s that makes a ton of noise, any idea what might be making it or what might be replaced or fixed on it? Not everyone needs custom hardware so kits would be fine, even assembled kits (so, sure, don't use mac or windows, but you don't have to build your own either). Sometimes giving people more choices confuses and paralyzes them and they will end up doing less of what you're aiming to persuade them to do so businesses know that and often try to only offer so many choices.

ok yeah I've heard people argue what you argue so I understand, I guess I wonder when the time would be to switch from your point of view as I told the other comment, I'm not sure much more is sustainable over +cycling and +horses, we can burn gas until we run out though I guess...

true so do you think it's best to destroy it or recycle it? But also how likely is it to have that, either? Is there a use case for a usb stick that may have tampered hardware (something you can use it for that doesn't require it being perfect)?

on a quick scan, this doesn't mention any secure way to do it, just how to erase (it assumes there's nothing problematic on the usb "dongle" to begin with)
