It’s supposed to be a democratic country because power is derived from the people— from the consent of the governed. The phrase “We the People, in order to form a more perfect union…” in our preamble is an example.
This is a different thing from a “direct democracy” where everyone votes on everything and you get mob rule. The founders were clearly and explicit against that. But they were not against power being derived from the people and needing the consent of the governed. It has nothing to do with being a progressive.
If power is [supposed to be] derived from the people in a system of government, it is “democratic”. We [in the US] are in a system set up as a constitutional democratic republic.
