Any Analysis of the Ethereum Hack?

My understanding is the Blockchain was not hacked - instead a company building a contracts engine had their own protocols hacked.

Is that accurate? What are the ramifications, in your opinion, for long term success of Ether? Namely, did the Blockchain interests handle the problem correctly?

I read that they are considering a revision which will allow a process for refunding transactions without forking a new Blockchain. How real is that possibility?
