What is your preferred SCM?

Mercurial is my choice. It just makes it easy to organize all sorts of data in a distributed manner and the learning curve is not as high as git (I don't really need the performance that git offers.)

If it wasn't for Git's nice decentralised features I would prefer Subversion to it. A linear history with a monotonously increasing revision number is best. Never tried anything else.

[EDIT] I started programming around the time nearly everyone started switching over to Git so I didn't even get much chance to use Subversion.

Subversion.

Why? What do like about it?

Git is my choice because of the light-weight branching and decentralization. I spent the last few years setting up git workflows for the development team I was on and it was a good experience. If I had to choose a secondary alternative it would be svn.
