Classification of the "Y Combinator": Algorithm, Data-strcuture, Design Pattern, Magic?

I am the moderator over at algorithms and someone posted that the Y Combinator is their favorite algorithm.
To me it seems to almost defy classification other than "concept". Your thoughts?

Y Combinator and Lambda Calculus are very powerful concepts. If interested watch Programming with nothing. Classify it in Combinators.
