How does Voat's DDoS prevention via browser detection work?

I read a bit on how the level 7 DDoS Voat is experiencing works, but I'm wondering how the DDoS protection "portal" that detects a "real" browser works. Since the HTTP GET request itself is not good enough, I'm thinking maybe there's an ajax relay of some sort during the 5 second wait time.
Anyone know the technical details? Thanks!

here it says it just checks if js and cookies are enabled (and makes you wait 5 secs). But it's from 2013 so it could be different now...

That's interesting, I had a feeling Javascript would be involved. Although it makes me wonder if there's a sliver of people out their with JS disabled that can't access Voat as a result. Of course, that's going to be true for most websites if that's the case.

Well... i sure can't access it with the "boats for voat" app in android when that thing is enabled
