In your opinion, what are the absolute essential vim plugins and vimrc configuration?

I have recently picked up Vim and I am loving it. It makes me feel like the hackers you see in the movies. But I feel like it's a little too bare-bones. I would like to know about the best plugins and configurations that would make my life easier. Thanks

Expand tabs to spaces, set soft tabstop to 4. Indent with tab or >>. Vim's pretty powerful out of the box.

Janus is nice, it is actually a combination of a lot of plugins, most notably tab completion with SuperTab and Syntastic for code checking, and a lot of customization.

You can use Janus directly, or simply look at the plugins and conf it contains to find cool stuff to use yourself.

A little bit of advice I give to everyone interested in vim : once you're confortable with the basic stuff, learn to use macros. Trust me, it's awesome.

Ive been using the awesome version of amix's Ultimate vimrc. just pull from git, run the install script and you're good to go.

  • vim-plug to manage your plugins (I have tried several plugin managers and that one is my favourite by far)
  • fugitive for excellent git integration
  • ctrlp for quick access to files and buffers
