Are p2p messaging programs solid yet? What are the more used ones? I know http://getaether.net but this is more like a forum and its not working very well.

Tox works at least somewhat well, but the clients for it are iffy.

Looks like development has moved to https://tox.chat/ after some internal issues.

As mentioned, Tox, and there is also Bitmessage for email-like uses.
