Does anyone have good resources for robotics programming?

I'm an experienced programmer, but lately I've been interested in doing some small projects with robotics. My experience has mostly been in modelling and simulation, and recently some machine learning so at the moment I guess I'm looking for resources on writing programs to "talk" with robotic hardware. Do you guys know any good texts or resources? I've checked /v/robotics, but that sub looks kinda dead. Thanks!

ROS (Robot Operating System) is a good place to start. There is a fair amount of support for both prebuilt robots and components and it's all open source so no cost for the software. http://wiki.ros.org/

Personal projects that can make use of 3D printing or something more industrial/academic? The different resources are usually board/controller dependent.

Without knowing anything about you, other then what you said, I would probably point you towards the rasberry pi class of diy. it means getting your hands on hardware relatively quickly, and gets you used to the basics.
