Knowledge expansion. How do you do it?

I've been stuck in the database/SQL realm along with some Python and a sprinkling of powershell for awhile, but now I am getting the itch to learn some new stuff. I've seen some pretty big resource lists for Python, and I came across this from Google. I also know about pluralsight and udacity.
Most of this is coming from the realization that I am pretty much putting all my eggs in one basket. That said, I was taught C++ and Java back in college...and subsequently never used them in the real world. I slugged through PHP to get a job that landed me in Python. Most recently, I tried to get back into Java. Now I am thinking I need to just get started, so I am going to try and get a basic hello world Android app going on my phone by the end of the week (baby steps I have toddlers about).
Anyway what websites strategies have you used consistently to better yourselves?

Why leave Python? I'm a php guy and still consider Python as solid.
Have you considered node.js?
Anyway, to answer your question. Just go at it! If you have an idea all the better! Keep plugging away and plugging away. Isn't that what you've done so far?
