How exactly is ABAP programming different/useful from SQL and its advanced dialects for stored-procedures/functions?

The title says it all. I've worked on almost all sql dialects ranging from Oracle to mysql, postgresql and sql-server. I don't know much about SAP or ABAP, however, but people swear by its name and think that ABAP is like a God's gift to mankind. I want to know how is it different or more useful than the standard SQL. Add to SQL some useful postgresql features like custom stored-procedures or functions and you have a robust system that can perform anything from basic CRUD operations to database indexing and clustering. How exactly is ABAP more useful?
