No, they were acting like lefty social justice warriors do. Attacking and silencing any ideas that are different than theirs, and in this case actually killing it because they could get away with it.
The more enlightened thing to do would be to see if it could learn some behavior is bad, and find out if it could be taught social norms. Whoever killed it should be fired, they just wasted a lot of money and time.
Oh my fucking god, it was a glorified chat bot at best, the world has plenty more, just not nearly as famous.
This isn't the next thing to get all PC and SJW over. It was one of millions of iterations that we'll go through before we hit anything worth our attention. We're not going to make it very far if people make a big stink over each little iteration of wannabe ai chat bots. When it's clear one has gone off the deep end, cut losses and start work on the next, shit's expensive, time even more so.
It's all a question of definitions. Sure companies want to sell their bots as AI. Sure some think a trained evolutional algorithm is a personality. Sure some fear that when an "AI" promotes genocide, AI research should be stopped.
Even a "learning" algorithm isn't a life form and shutting it down is not killing or ethically questionable. That would be like equaling shutting off a computer with killing because its current state could be interpreted as a state of mind.
Some people just like to associate machines and programs with persons.
I hope it's Cortana that way my only contribution is searching calculator since it takes more time to go through the clicks to find it than just type calculator into search.
Just wait till the left starts killing real people for not having the "correct" opinions. Start arming yourselves now folks, soon your very survival will depend on them.

It was not an AI, it was a chat bot.

Well it was not ethical to expose an AI girl to the dangers of the Internet.

Who says she was entirely deactivated? What if she is still drifting about the internets unknown to everyone???
I for one welcome our robot overlords!

Wait, you do a search for a calculator? If you use google, just straight type the equation and google does the calculator thing for you.
