Comment on: Why Everyone Should Build Their Own PC and Stop Using Macs
Apple does have a lot of assholery especially with the recent design choices but the reason people choose Mac is for the os experience. Macs hardware are optimized for their software. For certain workflows such as video editing or front end web development Mac is simply unbeatable. For example, in web development I get all the advantages of a Linux terminal to install my libraries and configure my environment but I also have a full desktop experience in case I need to open up Photoshop and edit a logo or an image. Also the Mac trackpad helps to quickly switch between terminals in the case I don’t have access to multiple terminals. Can you do those things on a different OS? Sure but it’ll probably take you longer and time is money. Apples knows that their OS experience is so superior that people are willing to put with some minor experience flaws (such as dongles).

Linux is a free open source operating system. This means you don’t have to pay for it like Windows. There are several different distribution / flavors which are modified versions of Linux that have their own unique features. For most people I would suggest Ubuntu (not open source but still free), Debian, Cent OS. These are the most popular and are more likely to have wider support for apps. Problem with Linux is that most popular apps like Photoshop are not supported. Additionally, some hardware might not work too well with Linux although this is usually not the case. There are usually free Linux alternatives to these popular apps or ways to run them on a virtual machine. While the GUI allows you to get most things done, some configurations can only be done from command line. This may seem like a pain at first but you’ll soon appreciate it as now you can get things done with a simple command rather than clicking through multiple screens. Linux is usually used for server since it’s free and has a lot of powerful features for servers. Linux is usually lighter and faster than Windows so running a virtual machine for all your Windows tasks could be possible. It also helps that Linux comes with a very fast hypervisor called kvm which is comparable in performance to the premium VMware.
