Two things. 1: Why are we censoring comments in this very thread? 2: I don't know how the sub grew, but I remember it was started after /r/news kept suppressing the truth about the Orlando Pulse shooting and the Nice/Bataclan attacks during election season. I suspect that it grew and challenged the narrative too much. It could not be tolerated.
