I imagine that working in San Francisco has to be a nightmare for anyone in the programming industry. The best of the best of the best will be there, all trying to find jobs. Kind of like trying to be a rock musician, general talent isn't going to be enough. My initial thought was "he probably would do well in another city". Now he works in New York.
