A good buddy of mine has an Alexa. It's the most frivolous thing I've ever seen in my life and I doubt he uses the thing at all when no one's around to be impressed by it.

Comment on: Wikipedia launches new code of conduct that bans "false" info and "trolling," encourages preferred pronoun use
According to this (https://www.howtogeek.com/260023/how-to-download-wikipedia-for-offline-at-your-fingertips-reading/) it's only 150GB for the entire thing, pictures and all. The best time to download this would have been some time in the months before they memoryholed Ellen Page being a woman, the second best time would be now; despite its faults, a still shot of it frozen in time will remain an exceptional resource on a wide variety of subjects long into the future, and hopefully some enterprising individual will create an alternative someday.

I'm a regular donator myself but I'm done starting now that they're (more) ideologically compromised. Luckily you can download the entire website as-is and it's surprisingly light on the HDD. Someone should make a clone of the site as-is and allow for more open discussion.

Section 230 is good, the problem is these sites aren't acting as service providers in good faith and instead are acting as publishers by picking and choosing which otherwise completely legal content they will "allow", selectively enforcing their terms of service etc.

If you're using a mobile device apparently Apple made it so that BAT accumulation was against their TOS at some point; I'm not sure if the same rings true for Android. On desktop though it works just fine for me, I have about $50 worth despite donating over 15 BAT a month. I do kind of wonder if I get more because I actively donate but I'm not sure it works like that at all.

Not sure why people have such a negative opinion of BAT. It's opt-in, and with many people arbitrarily losing their access to conventional revenue streams it's a nice alternative, imperfect though it may be.

Comment on: DuckDuckGo Reaches 100M Daily Search Queries
I've been using DuckDuckGo for many years and it's great. Google wouldn't have gotten to where it is without providing a good service but there are quite a few very capable alternatives out there, I like the idea of helping the smaller guys mature because competition is good for everybody. Apart from Youtube I've been Google-free for quite a while and thanks to alternatives like DuckDuckGo I've hardly noticed.

Comment on: Pirate Bay Founder Thinks Parler’s Inability to Stay Online Is ‘Embarrassing’
I'm not a fan of Parler at all personally, but what does the Pirate Bay host other than 1kb torrent files? Few pictures, no audio or video as far as I recall. It hasn't changed functionally or aesthetically much-if at all-since its inception. What a stunning achievement. It's not like they've never gone down for a protracted period of time either, in fact they did just a few months ago:
"The Pirate Bay Is Down"

Wow. Must have been pretty embarrassing for them. It's like this entire article was written so that he could get that "viral" soundbite out.
