Comment on: Humanity wastes about 500 years per day on CAPTCHAs
YubiKeys start at $40 so it would take lot to get up and running as a scammer, they’ll probably deauth your key if you’re found to be abusing it so replacing it is costly. A device like this absolutely needs to be anonymous otherwise me and everyone else will stick with captchas.

Comment on: Framework’s modular DIY laptop is available for pre-order | Engadget
Shipping dates are provided here https://frame.work/products/laptop/configuration/edit also check out the DIY edition, you can lower the price by removing Windows 10. Notice how the website isn't janky like other laptop manufacturers, that's why I have so much faith in them, other sites have terrible designs and it shows they aren't going to support your model a year later. A ton of people want Apple quality and marketing (I think the site quality falls under that) and this is the closest thing as of now. Going back to your previous comment, the dongles do take up a lot of internal space, my main gripe is the battery size as 90W would be great but its locked to 55W because of the chassis size constraint. Maybe we will see an improvement with battery technology soon as EVs become mainstream 🤔

I'm thinking of selling my PC and using a thin and light laptop instead, if this happens I'll definitely spend over $1000 and completely switch over to Linux and by then S76 might be doing everything in house 😳 Here's the creator showcasing the hardware, he's not using it but you can see how its put together and disassembled https://youtu.be/XFrJcjCbCA8

System76 are using Clevo laptops, what they are able to do with them it still really good but I'd prefer if they made everything themselves like Framework. After reading this blog entry called [What Real People Say about Their Computers](https://cheapskatesguide.org/articles/personal-computer-stories.html) I'm leaning towards purchasing a laptop housing where the internals can be upgraded, S76 with a Macbook quality milled metal frame is exactly what I'm looking for and Framework are the only ones closest to that and Dells under $1000 are made from crappy plastic.

>The customize it yourself line is bs. Multiple computer manufacturers allow you to do this or have different lines with different specs. Who? Are they user repair friendly? Are they thin, light and 13.5 inch? I'm looking for a new laptop and System76 or Framework are the best options I've come across,

>Again with the shilling. People are excited that this type of laptop is making a comeback, look at HN. >their definition of modular is having 4usbc ports that your have built in dongles for If you checked you'd see they will have other parts available so you can choose which internals you want and the ability to keep the same housing but completely change CPU generation is possible, its much more than ordinary laptop. >it's 2000usd for a 13.5inch laptop with an I 7 and 32gn of ram. It's really not all that. Why do you keep bringing up the highest configuration, what point are you trying to make? They clearly state starting prices for the DIY edition as well which is $749.

Comment on: Framework Laptop pre-orders are open
The better options aren’t user replaceable and that 2000usd configuration is for people who need the features which that i7 variant provides. They will release different motherboards with AMD CPUs later this year hopefully.

Comment on: [ MUST READ ] Toward a Technological Cage for the Masses
Zoomer here, I read that it wasn't just the autists in the 60s which programmed/ had knowledge of computers [source](https://www.historyextra.com/period/20th-century/the-changing-role-of-women-in-british-computing/), also some redditor commented how his mother learnt bash for her desk job which is way more than the average person knows now. As for your point about smartphones, I've owned both iOS and Android devices for a while and can confirm they are equally rubbish, iOS's walled garden drives me insane when you need a £100 yearly license to keep your own app installed so why would I bother to tinker and create my own app if it can't be held on my phone for longer than 7 days as it needs to be signed again, how the fuck will I show people my app without knowing in a week advance that it needs to be resigned? Thats £100 a YEAR for something I want to keep on my phone that won't generate any revenue, at least provide a convoluted way of bypassing this nonsense so that normies cannot accidentally install malware without cucking me. I want a cozy device not a portable Linux terminal, thats what laptops are for, Android has benefits but my PC has it all so I can live without having these nice features when I'm not at home. Smartphones are a normie device and all the options are rubbish imo, at least with an iPhone I get an OLED screen, Dolby Audio and a working backup feature which Android STILL doesn't have! Oh well, at least when it comes to computers there are still good options and more coming.

>we need an "inner domain" with an inaccessible technical barrier to block normies Completely agree with everything you said and ironically I spout my hatred for the internet and technology on *Discord* every week like clockwork. Urbit looks promising I've been aware of it for a while now, it provides a barrier to entry which blocks out the masses as you said, but in the end, someone will publish a guide on how to access this "new internet" which will open the floodgates to fools flying in and shitting up the place. Gemini is brilliant because it was designed as a deterrent to big corps as their incentive to use it was culled by the inability to monetize anything, we need more technologies like this!

Is this a form of centralized control of file versions? From the front page: "When you look up a file to view or download, you're asking the network to find the nodes that are storing the content behind that file's hash."
