if you read the help section of https://cock.li it clearly states that while XMPP is offered, all of the clients are garbage. I can confirm the same. Element for Matrix is a very good client but the matrix server is a giant resource hog. if someone fixes the XMPP clients or the Matrix servers we can be rid of centralization but until then only things like Signal have a chance to become popular
