The thing, that it's not going to play out this way. Programs don't run because of triggered feelings but because of well crafted code. If they manage to drive the currently succesful projects into the ditch, the competent people are just going to start new projects that are in turn successful.

It's the circle of life. Something has to die for something new to be born; but ideas don't go away because they hurt some hipster's feelings. They just reincarnate somewhere else.

Quite frankly, opinions of contributors to FOSS that are not directly related to the project and are not voiced on a platform that hosts the project / is part of it should not be any business of other contributors.

I'm going to advocate for indirect recursion. Stuff like map or fold guarantees you, that you won't get infinite loops.

Direct recursion however can get ugly and I also think it's best avoided.
